California, Here We Come

A Special Thank You from Mrs. Capiti
Thank you so very much for your generous donation to my classroom. Your gift of the books is making quite an impact on our study of California history. The books have been used to help the students in their learning of the California Indian groups, the European explorers, the Spanish missionaries and the building of the California Missions. The students have been in "mission groups" of 4, and each member of the group was responsible for 1 paragraph of research, that they have now compiled into an in-depth report of their particular mission. They had to include information about the mission's founder and background, the CA Indian group that the mission directly affected (positively and negatively), what was the mission's purpose (trading, education, agricultural?) and its present day use. I did require that the report be done, at least a rough draft, before the actual "construction" began. I must say that my new classroom resources made the biggest impact on the students who could NOT be taken to the public library to do their own research. Many of my students come from a single parent household or are in the care of other relatives, who work 1 or more jobs and just can't get them to the library. Those students were able to use the books and complete research for their paragraph contribution in class. I even have had one student borrow some of the materials to read at home just for enjoyment! After the winter break, we will be ready to begin the part of California history concerning the westward expansion, including the building of the railroad and the Gold Rush, which brought a huge amount of settlers to California. I am very excited to use the class set of By the Great Horn Spoon, to supplement the Gold Rush learning. It is a wonderful piece of historical fiction that we will read together in class. The students are looking forward to it, they have been asking, "when are we going to read Gold Rush chapter books?" Again, thank you so very much and know that your gift has made a positive impact on my classroom and has been a part of the development of a possible future California historian, modern day explorer/archaeologist or a California Indian rights/civil rights activist!

With gratitude,
Mrs. Capiti

My students need resources to research and build their CA mission and a class set of "By The Great Horn Spoon", to supplement their learning of the CA gold rush.

If you attended elementary school in CA during your 4th grade year...you probably built a mission! My class researched and built missions using books that I checked out of public library because... Show More

First of all, let me start out by saying thank you for your participation in 'Give & Get'. We have seen an amazing outpouring of support and participation. It is truly an honor to be a part of something so special.

It is our ambition to fund as many projects for public schools in need as we possibly can. Based on that ambition as well as large amount of feedback we have received, we have decided to revise our weighting formula. Projects are now weighted based their cost as well as the number of projects that the teacher has requested.

A teacher's first project listed on 'Give & Get' will not require any additional votes unless the project costs over $1,000.00. Any other project will require proportionally more votes based on the cost of the project and the number of projects that have been requested by the teacher.

Project Cost Projects Requested Votes Proportional Votes
A $600.00 1 100 100
B $2,000.00 1 100 50
C $600.00 2 100 25
D $600.00 3 100 12
E $2,000.00 3 100 6
F $3,000.00 3 100 3

In the example table, project A costs less than $1,000 and it is the first project that the teacher has requested. The votes for that project are not weighted. Project B costs over $1,000, but the teacher has not previously requested any projects. This project will be weighted based on its cost alone. Projects E and F both cost over $1,000 and the teachers have previously requested two other projects. Those projects will be weighted based on cost and the number of prior requested projects.

We are constantly striving to make 'Give & Get' better and more fair for everyone. As always, please continue to send us your thoughts/feedback and we can continue to improve.

LATEST UPDATE (06/08/2012):
Weighting now takes into consideration all active requested projects and requires proportionally more votes for previously funded projects.
